So What the Dickens is a Tweet Up?
Twitter meetups, or Tweetups are happening all over, especially in big cities. They are literally an organised event where social networkers (particularly twitterers) gather and meet up in real life. We live rurally and are about to have our first local one.
But what do you do at a Tweet Up? Talk in sentences of 140 characters? That would kill the party!
No, tweet ups give you the opportunity to meet up with your online contacts, followers and friends, boost your business, have a couple of drinkies and meet new people. Yum. They are different from other networking events because you never know who will come to them and they are likely to attract a different crowd than the usual networking organisations do. Social networking appeals to people from all walks of life and all age groups. It is infectious and creates serendipitous conversations and connections, it breaks down geographical boundaries and lots of social norms.
If half the people who I have invited do come, it will be a bizarre mixture of off and online friends who would never normally meet. Could be interesting.
Twitter is not a platform to develop meaningful relationships. It is an introductory service, a bit like directory enquiries with more complex search possibilities. Twitter is often the first point of contact in the social networking funnel and connections are deepened elsewhere. For instance, invitations are extended to visit an external site or meet at another social networking platform like Facebook.
The venue for a Tweet Up is therefore really important. You wan people to feel free and safe when they meet up for the first time. I have picked The Mill in Ulverston because it is relaxed, beautiful and accessible. People should feel at ease there and enjoy the ambiance.
I am working with the local newspaper to create some buzz during the lead up. @nickincumbria is a really switched on multi-media guy who works with the Evening Mail and who is co-sponsoring the event with me. YaY. I also had a mini tweet up with some other movers and shakers who busy inviting their connections.
@keykate is a brilliant local journalist who is right in there with me making a noise.
@ben_tyson is the third journalist involved who is doing the press release and working hard behind the scenes.
Today’s job is to contact online PR and marketing people who have already run Tweet Ups and scrounge some other tips.
I have used twtvite to create smart looking invitations and posted them on various blogs and social networking accounts. This gives us an idea of how many people are likely to attend.
Here is Your Invite to Ulverston’s Tweet Up
I have also contacted people from my Facebook accounts, what I call my local one, with people I know quite well and have offline contact with and my business one with international friends. I have asked my local friends to follow me on Twitter and then I will be able to follow their networks too.
I have publicised the fact that the place will be crawling with journalists and reporters as everyone loves a bit of publicity for their business. It’s almost as good as having a celebrity.
This will mean we end up with a room full of the most successful local entrepreneurs like @glen_richardson and tech-savvy people like @bohemiantrove.
We will also the creative media industries represented by people like @lakestv.
And, there will be a bottle of wine given as a prize for one luck business card owner, so bring your business cards and pop them in the hat. It could be you!
The purpose for this event is just to meet others and share how we are all using social networking to enable us to work and live in Ulverston. I am personally involved in helping businesses and individuals in and around Ulverston to work remotely. I run a community website and I help people set up, manage and market their own websites. We have a massive problem with brain drain here and the answer is remote working. I want to see people talking to each other about how they use social media to enhance their productivity, share creative and whacky ideas and inspire one another. Who knows, we might see some new joint venture partnerships.
So, I will get their early ready to welcome people and encourage them to put a pile of business cards on the table so everyone swaps details. I will be the hostess with the mostest and look after you, give you a name badge and make introductions. Your badge will only have your Twitter Name so have your USP polished up and at the ready! Everyone is welcome whether you tweet or not!
I think it will be fun and a great way of mixing with other switched on people. Looking forward to a bit of a twit with you!
Please click on the link to add your name to the RSVP list even if you can’t come. Feel free to add comments or photos of Ulverston or your business and remember to RT!
